I don't think rock and roll taught fundamentally bad values nor did playing mario or doom.

Disney is worse in ways, subtle sexual imagery in their cartoons and interpersonal drama in their teen shows. Kids are learning these patterns before they even get to social media
In the US parents can mostly give their kids porn, guns, and alcohol at home. Wherein the drug isn't itself illegal you are for practical purposes also able to give your kids drugs.
Being shown to cause harm is also a meaninglessly low standard. Bathtubs, pools, and bikes can cause harm. You would need to show an actually useful standard. Lets propose will cause an unacceptable level of harmn that cannot be mitigated by less restrictive means.
I don't buy the argument that you are unacceptably harmed because you aren't capable of denying your kid social media nor do I buy the idea that social media couldn't be regulated to be less shitty and harmful.
Exposing children to pornography is illegal federally and in all states, treated as distribution of obscene material or child exploitation with no parental exemptions. Federal law (18 U.S.C. § 2252) prohibits such exhibition to minors under 18, carrying severe penalties like imprisonment.
So precedent exists. Social media is at least as harmful as porn.
Has anyone ever in life been prosecuted for allowing their teen watch boobs on the internet? I mean if you at any time prior to 18 have a computer in their room you absolutely know that you basically provided an adult portal.
Before the internet as I kid I rewired our houses cable wiring and stole my dad's dirty magazines. Pretty sure damn near everyone saw adult material prior to 18.
Number of immigrants has been slowly increasing or steady for decades. It's a fantasy that it's a crisis or that there is a risk of tens of millions flooding our shores. We mostly drastically benefit from products downstream from cheap labor while tacitly allowing those who don't get in trouble so we can continue to benefit from this.
We could have "solved" immigration decades ago with enough punative treatment of employers but didn't want to.
If you want to actually stop it you could just ramp up punative treatment of employers over the next 5 years while keeping other policies at Obama or Bush era.
Half the undocumented without us family members would self deport gradually whilst jobs dried up. Offer amnesty to productive people with family roots and no criminal record and you end up with a microscopic undocumented pop.
Meanwhile DSHS is tweeting a pic of an island paradise with the caption America after 100M deportations. There are around 12M undocumented but about 100M non-whites if you have trouble interpreting their meaning or intention.
There are still other, non-trashy ways to record your screen. Motivated actors have no problem with such restrictions, as happens with everything. It is for exerting control over the normal users' behaviours and habits.
One correction to my message above: apparently Chrome on Windows is still 720p for Netflix, it was Edge that had 4k support. Or you can install the Netflix App on Windows too.
I agree it's a bit silly, but I think a lot of people don't really care about quality so long as they can watch it. I guess that'd also explain how Netflix gets away with such low bitrates for even the "high quality" versions of content.
I don't think I've seen Netflix comment on this since a long time ago, but back in 2018 it was:
- 15% PC
- 10% Smartphone
- 5% Tablets
- 70% TVs
In terms of viewing hours https://www.statista.com/chart/13191/netflix-usage-by-device.... So definitely most viewing on TV, but still something like 1/3 of households with TVs don't have a 4k TV at all (as of 2025) in the first place. Hard to definitively say more since Netflix & others don't seem to publish the numbers often.
I'd love to find out I'm wildly wrong though and have a bunch of people willing to push Netflix to have higher quality content... but so many people don't even seem to pay for the premium plan with 4k (anecdotally, Netflix doesn't seem to publish numbers on that) that I'm not holding my breath as I sit here with UHD Blu-Ray quality instead :D. It seems like most people just want something quick to turn on in the background than something to really sit down and bask in every detail of.
Raw score is often quite frankly crap. It's often still easy to surface the negative reviews and since people don't at least at present fake those you can find out what they didn't like about a product. If a given products critics are only those whining about something irrelevant, not meaningful to your use case, or acceptable to you and it overall appears to meet spec you are often golden.
The average human is a moron you wouldn't trust to watch your hamster. If you watched them outside of the narrow range of tasks they have been trained to perform by rote you would probably conclude they should qualify for benefits by virtue of mental disability.
We give them WAY too much credit by watching mostly the things they have been trained specifically to do and pretending this indicates a general mental competence that just doesn't exist.
Such a bizarre way to put it. Imagine if I said your house was a strategic requirement for my family because of proximity to my new job and extra room for my kids and I couldn't rule out murdering you.
Especially when the U.S. has a military base there already and has full military cooperation with Denmark/Greenland. The real motivation is pretty clearly resource extraction.
What is stopping him from simply militarily occupying Greenland indefinitely? He could just fabricate a reason (“national security”, “drugs”, etc.) and send troops. Wouldn’t need to involve Congress for that kind of military action, and the Supreme Court has said that all other branches of government should defer to the executive’s judgment on foreign policy. And there is zero chance a Republican House would impeach him for doing that.
The real motivation isn't geopolitical, but signalling to domestic voters that Trump is truly 'America first' and will sabotage any other country if it gets American voters an extra dollar
The resource question is a red herring: "Greenlandic ministers have also said their island is “open for business”. But US investors have been slow to show an interest in the nascent mining industry, officials say." (https://www.ft.com/content/c1c8abb1-5c09-46b0-a1d3-68341c4e5...)
Yes, it's potentially a case of a country taken in by their own propaganda
We do a lot of important and meaningful work around the world to support democracy, peace and stability. This isn't selfless — it's to create a market for goods and services, and maintain our sphere of influence.
We're so good at shouting the first bit and whispering the latter that voters have come to fully believe it's all charity work, and feel like it's taking bread out of their mouths.
> Funny considering Trump ran on policies nearly the opposite of what he's doing today
MAGA base and Trump supporters are not rational. It does not matter what Trump is doing or saying, they're "taking their country back" even if they're losing their jobs or benefits. This is downright a cult of personality.
That's the world of geopolitics for you - there's no police to prevent you from murdering someone. Someone could fight you directly, but it's never going to come to that, so everyone will just grumble in mild disapproval for now.
One of the wealthiest guys in town had poked his head out of his mansion and is now holding you at gunpoint in your house. He feels poor and thinks the wealth in your house is enough to sate his needs, you see. Plus, it's much more conveniently-placed than his mega-mansion. Either you give the house to him, or he kills you on the spot and maybe some of the neighborhood potentially riles up against him. Just hope he doesn't want to make an example of you by crucifying you in the front yard, or something like that.
That is what the HTML 4 !doctype Tag - https://www.quackit.com/html/html_4/tags/doctype_html_public... - was meant for. Ideally, an old client that cannot parse a newer HTML spec should inform the user to update the client. Developers could then either support old versions of their site (more easily, in such a case) or can simply decide not to deal with outdated browsers. (In fact, isn't that what most BiGTech sites actually do now, through convoluted browser feature detections - "Your browser is no longer supported ...").
